If you have never listened to a Five Finger Death Punch album then do not be dismissive just because of the name. The only real respite comes during track fourteen, 'I Apologize', giving the listener something of a breather before hitting repeat becomes a necessity.
The sound, courtesy of Kevin Churko (take another bow), is simply huge, allowing every song to impact and resonate. The Jeremy Spencer (drums)/Chris Kael (bass) rhythm section lays down the bedrock and is the foundation for the overall power of the material. Jason Hook's guitar solos on '.Six' are imaginative and direct and he is backed up admirably by Zoltan Bathory. Equally brutal and emotional and showcasing Moody's vocal prowess (yes, the guy can sing), they change tempo regularly without straying too far from the main song structure. 'Question Everything' (love the mid-song Flamenco guitar) and 'Digging My Own Grave' contain a number of ideas in each song and exemplify what FFDP are all about. All the other songs are primarily adrenaline-fuelled and anthemic but the arrangements feature enough variation to avoid repetition and monotony during the fifty-five minutes running time. 'Jekyll And Hyde' reveals its dual personality in the form of a Rap-like verse and a chorus just crying out for a big arena sing-a-long. There are a number of time changes during the course of just three minutes and though this does not in any way relate to a Progressive mantra, it does highlight great creativity. The riffs are fierce and Ivan Moody's vocals are in equal measure caustic and clean. The title-track gets things off to a rampaging start. This time around the hooks are even bigger and I'm tempted to say that 'Got Your Six' is the band's most commercial release to date. This Punch hits hard and should not be diluted, but ice will be needed because temperatures will soar.Īdopting for the most part an 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' policy, the L.A.-based five-piece continue with their own no-nonsense musical style, a style that has served them well during the course of six studio albums. Blend together and you have the perfect recipe for a very tasty Punch.the Five Finger Death kind.
